Canary channel welcomed a new update with the feature Windows Protected Printing Mode, multiple bug fixes, and improvements. Windows 11 Build 26016.1000 (13/12/203) is the release that is the last update this year. The build is available in rs_prerelease and has some known issues in Widgets board. Some Insiders may encounter a download loop where the build appears to download multiple times with an error 8024200D. Thankfully, the download will succeed, and the build should install.

Features
Windows Protected Print Mode
Windows 11 Build 26016.1000 23H2 brings Windows protected print mode that allows your PC to print using the Windows modern print stack which is designed to work with Mopria certified printers only. Using Mopria-certified printers, you will no longer have to rely on 3rd-party application installers and gain extra security benefits. Printers will simply perform tasks in a safe and streamlined installation and printing process. See more about the security benefits of switching to IPP printing.
How to turn on Windows-protected print mode:
- Click Search and type gpedit.msc.
- Press Enter to launch the Local Group Policy Editor.
- Reach Computer Configuration => Administrative Templates => Printers.
- Right-click on Configure Windows protected print and select Edit.
- Check the option Enabled.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Windows protected print is enabled.

Improvements and changes
Taskbar & System Tray
- Windows 11 Build 26016.1000 23H2 Canary channel insider update added an icon to the Diagnose network problems entry when right-clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.
Bug fixes for known issues
- Windows Recovery Environment: This rs_prerelease build fixed WinRE to not render correctly in the previous flight.
- The update fixed keyboard shortcuts not working on the desktop – including using the delete key to delete files off of your desktop, CTRL key combo to take action on desktop icons, or using ALT+F4 on the desktop to open the shutdown dialog.
- Windows 11 Build 26016.1000 fixed an underlying issue causing the details pane in File Explorer to take keyboard focus sometimes unexpectedly.
- Furthermore, it fixed saving changes to shortcut (.link) was not possible in the last flight, as they would cite something that was using the process.
- The experts did some work to help improve the performance of loading Settings => Apps => Installed apps.
- Also, the rollout fixed Settings crashing when attempting to navigate to the System and Reserved section under System => Storage.
Known issues
General
- Some famous games may not work perfectly on the most recent builds in the Canary Channel. (Reminder)
- The developers’ team investigating print queue is showing a message saying it can’t find the app when opened.
- They are investigating a small number of Insiders to not be able to open Settings after the last flight. If you encounter this, please read this forum post for a workaround.
- Navigating to Settings => Power will crash Settings on this build. You can use the following commands to set power modes. powercfg /overlaysetactive will configure the active user-configured power mode, powercfg /q OVERLAY_SCHEME_CURRENT will get the active user configured power mode. Widgets
- You may encounter a loading delay when the Microsoft Start feed is re-enabled.
- In Windows 11 Build 26016.1000 23H2, announcements from the Microsoft Start feed are still displayed on the taskbar after the feed is hidden.
- The Widgets Board should itself close and reopen when enabling or disabling feeds.
- In this, rs_prerelease build, Keyboard navigation from settings subpages back to the top-level Settings page is broken.
- Incorrect fonts and spacing are used in some settings pages.
